Intermittent Fasting
While in Bali I learnt a lot about intermittent fasting. I have always felt that my body works more optimally when I only have 2 meals in a day, however I would mainly concentrate on breakfast and lunch and was never that fussed on having dinner.
To understand how intermittent fasting works, it is important to understand how our bodies are thought to work best. Basically there are three cycles/phases the body goes through each day, which lasts about 8 hours.
First in the morning, from 4am to 12 noon, the body goes through detoxification, and then from 12 noon to 8pm, it goes through the phase called appropriation (taking in nutrition – or eating). And from 8pm to 4am in the morning, the body goes through assimilation.
Intermittent fasting is the practice whereby we see how to optimise these specific times of day so that you can experience “divine health”. By that I mean clarity, energy, vitality, clean and healthy skin, clear eyes, feeling pain free and so much more.
Studies in gerontology (the study of longevity) shows some really profound effects on intermittent fasting, as well as other health benefits including, more energy, better digestion, mental focus and weight loss.
Do I get hungry???? Yes I do. What I have come to understand is that it is okay to be hungry. We have become friends. I feel it is a gift to be truly hungry and listen to what the body feels it needs. Often we use food (and alcohol) to stuff down feelings we are not ready to deal with. Intermittent fasting can help you break free from the mental concept of “needing” to eat all the time.
This is certainly not something I would recommend for a child, teenager or even a young adult. I would also not recommend this for some-one who is pregnant or breastfeeding. I feel as we age into our 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond I feel that if you only eat 2 meals a day – lunch and dinner – you will greatly reduce your chances of being sick because you allow your body to optimally assimilate nutrients at night and detoxify from most of the toxins.
